Make Your Mind Your Friend

Note: The following is an extract from my book

Awaken — Meditations of the Warrior

The world inside will dictate how you perceive the world outside.

Work on your mindset relentlessly.

Tend to your thoughts.  Do not let dark clouds linger and weigh you down.

Refuse to entertain negativity, envy or regret.

Work from a place of possibility, of abundance, of choice.

Ensure the world inside is serving you.  For it can be your greatest ally or most fearsome foe.

Win the inner battle, master your mind.

“Make your mind your friend.”

It was a phrase his first teacher had repeated over and over.  Anytime Akira struggled or hit a plateau in his training, his teacher was sure to calmly repeat some variant of this saying.

Often it would be whispered softly.  Sometimes it was a more forceful demand.  His teacher gauged what was needed to stir Akira in a moment, but he prodded Akira to develop his own ability to do this.

“It is critical to not only your training but also your survival that you develop the ability to self-regulate.  The Warrior who can win the inner battle is capable of facing any external battle” his teacher would guide.

“The first battle is always the one inside our own head”.

“Make your mind your friend”.

It was a phrase familiar to anyone trained in the ways of the warrior.

The biggest battle Akira would face would be the one inside.  The internal battle.

“It’s the same for all of us” his teacher would guide.

“We must tame our mind.  We must face our inner demons.  We must calm the storm that stirs inside. We must learn how to touch stillness in every moment. We must seek and see the light in what we do”.

“For the common man, these skills will serve him in life.  For the warrior, the skills are crucial to keep him alive and in the battle.”
