Growth Doesn’t Happen in a Comfort Zone

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined”. – Henry David Thoreau

Many of us are committed to trying to develop our best selves.  We want to be a little better than we were yesterday.

This can relate to all aspects of our lives from being better at our jobs, better at controlling our feelings, being a better parent or partner, better at listening, better at sharing, being a better painter, writer, singer.  The list is endless.

Whatever it is we are focused on, we want to improve, we want to grow.  The truth is, this growth doesn’t happen in a comfort zone.  We have to push ourselves.  We have to push ourselves beyond what we thought we were capable of.

The Quick Fix Myth

As a culture we are becoming evermore fixated on the quick fix, the hack and getting things done easier and quicker.

5 Second Abs.

2 week MBA.

5 Minutes to a Zen-Like Calmer You.

We lap these soundbites and headlines up.  Looking for ways to get where we want to quickly.  Get there the ‘smart’ way, without spending too much of ourselves.

True growth doesn’t work like this.  We have to work hard for it.  We have to spend a little, or perhaps even a lot, of ourselves.

The Power of Consistency & Effort

True growth requires a lot of effort and a lot of consistency.  We have to turn up and do the work.  We have to earn it.

Being consistent means not being discouraged.  It means putting the blinkers on and keeping our end goal in mind when things get tough.  It means committing fully to a process and a path.  It means putting our head down and applying ourselves.  It means pressing on and spending energy where others give up.

Let’s commit to getting a little more comfortable with uncomfortable.   Let’s grow.
