The Thousand Mile Journey

“Step by step walk the thousand-mile road.”
Miyamoto Musashi

So much of our culture is obsessed by the idea of overnight transformations, quickfire reinventions, shortcuts and ‘hacking’ our way to our dreams.  The secret sauce, we are led to believe.

But is this approach realistic?

How many people in your life can you point to that have proved these ideals are anything more than a myth the media and sales folks continue to peddle?

How many people anywhere really achieve meaningful change in this hyper-speed fashion?

I’m willing to bet that number would be at, or very close to, zero!

What is realistic is the small step approach.

Taking one step toward our goals is still forward progress. Linking these steps together over an extended time period is the route to significant change.

One step, then another, then repeat.

Not as bombastic or exciting as a sales pitch perhaps. However, this approach has a longer history of real-world success.

The simple truth is, small steps add up if we keep putting them together. They compound.

That far off goal becomes closer with each and every step we make in its direction.
