Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Many of us wander.  We move from this to that.  However, wandering is not always to be confused with lost.

For some of us, settling down in one place for too long doesn’t feel right.  It’s a big world, why only experience a tiny part of it?  Why not explore different cultures, alternative ways of living?

A job for life is a dream for many, for the wanderers of the world it may be a nightmare.  Being in one job too long can start to make some feel stifled and stale.  We crave something different.  We thrive on change.  We like to start, then finish and move onto a new challenge.

Our culture, and the example of those around us, may try to conform us all into a certain picture.  The house with the mortgage for the next 50 years.  The same job with that comfortable, Groundhog day feel, the same colleagues, the staff pension and holiday benefits.  The brand new car every 3 years.  These are ideals that mean much to many, prizes that are chased hard.  But they are also turn others off.

Wandering is wired into some of us, to fight it is to fight who we are.

There are many types of wanderers in life.  Not all wanderers travel around the world but some do.  Not all wanderers change where they live regularly, some do.  Not all wanderers change jobs often or are self-employed, or companies of one, but some are.  There are many ways to wander.

The wanderer craves freedom and flexibility, in fact these are some of their most cherished ideals.  The ability to pick up and move (mentally and/or physically) keeps them sharp.  They seek out adventure and exploration.  They embrace new.  Where others fear change, they welcome it.  They crave growth through experiences.

Not all that wander are lost.
