“Zen practice is to open up our small mind.”
– Shunryu Suzuki
Your mileage may vary but here are some simple ideas that improve my feelings of wellbeing.
Daily:
- Walk
- Meditate (this can take many forms and you don’t need to call it meditating)
- Spend time in nature
- Think of 1–3 things you are grateful for (through the lens of gratitude, the world looks different)
- Listen to music
- Ensure at least 80% of your diet is full of healthy, single ingredient, foods (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish etc)
- Read and/or listen to something that inspires you
- Work on your mindset
- Develop a breathwork practice (most often straight after meditating or on a walk for me)
- Have a sleep and restoration routine (i.e. go to bed at a similar time each night, start to wind down an hour of so before bed)
- Say no to almost everything that does not align with your priorities for the day and life (no is skill we must all learn)
- Protect some white space in your day (do not over-commit yourself)
2-4 times a week:
- Lift weights (and your bodyweight) – challenge yourself, strive to improve and get stronger
- Do a form of cardio you enjoy (bike, run, swim, sled work, skip, row – mix it up)
- Stretch what is tight (Yoga and Pilates may work well here or a simple, targeted, practice of your own)
Quarterly/6 monthly/yearly
- Travel
- Go on an adventure
- Assess where you are against your goals (write them down!)
- Break you goals into a focused list of themes and priority actions to work off against
Limit:
- Alcohol (if you choose to drink)
- Negativity (remove toxic energy and individuals from your life)
- Complaining
