The Burden of Chasing More

“We should not, like sheep, follow the herd of creatures in front of us, making our way where others go, not where we ought to go.” – Seneca

The ad men sell us ‘more’ as the ultimate answer to all of life’s questions and problems.  What they don’t tell us is that more can also become a burden.

The pursuit for more can lead to:

– Too much stuff (aka clutter) that adds little real value to our lives

– Too many commitments, overcrowded diaries and a feeling that we have ‘no time’

– More stress

– More comparing

– Less space to breathe and take in the present moment

– Less freedom to be who we want to be and live how we want to live.

The Cost of More
More comes with a cost attached beyond the actual price.  Sometimes that cost is a heavy one to pay. Every time we say yes to more, we are in effect, saying no to something else.

We can however decide to move in a different direction.

We can recognise when enough is enough.  We can seek out more experiences over more stuff.  We can make time for slow.  We can appreciate the lightness and freedom of enough.

Sometimes more can indeed be more, oftentimes it can just become too much.  Better to find our own brand of enough and live accordingly.  When we really take the time to do the necessary self-inventory to find this version of enough, it may be
a lot less than we thought we once needed.
