Focus on the Essentials

“To attain knowledge, add things everyday. To attain wisdom, remove things every day.” Lao Tzu

The bare essentials, the few things that truly matter.

This is what is left when we pare down and strip away the distractions in life.

These essentials include the people and relationships we are committed to.  The things that make our hearts sing most.  The goals and achievements that spark a fire inside.  Our health.

This is the signal in amongst the noise.

A focused life that lives in accordance with these essentials takes a rare discipline.  A necessary price of entry is we have to find ways to say no to lots of requests on our time. We become selective.  It means we stop following the collective herd.  It means we define our own versions of success, not blindly chase what someone else says success should look like.

This approach to living our lives is counter-culture.  Most everything we encounter on a daily basis tries to push us into the next distraction.  We must learn to filter.

We learn to simplify where others complicate.  We focus on enough, not necessarily always on more.  We lean into the power of positive constraints.

Focus on the essentials.  Live intentionally.
