Normal is a State of Mind

“If it rains, let it rain, if the wind blows, let it blow” – Ikkyu

The phrase ‘new normal’ has had lots of airtime of late.   ‘Normal’ is subjective.  It’s also something of an illusion.   An oxymoron.

What normal is, or isn’t, is mostly about our own state of mind.  The expectations we bring with us to this moment.

The truth, life doesn’t care much what we think is normal.  It will roll on regardless.  Freedoms we have taken as givens, are not guaranteed to always be there.  What we think is fair, isn’t how things will always play out.

This is life, not a Hollywood production.  Happy endings are not guaranteed.

We can take accountability of this by working on our own mindset, at a deeper level.  We can create our own state of ‘normal’, from inside out.

Our Own Framework for a New Normal

We can:

  • Commit to living life with gratitude
  • Appreciate what we have, not always focus on what we don’t
  • Treat ourselves (and others) with kindness and compassion
  • Drop our attachments
  • Focus
  • Simplify
  • Refuse to engage with the fear based, collective mindset that is so prevalent
  • Foster a positive outlook
  • Remove distractions
  • Unsubscribe
  • Be selective in what news we engage with
  • Refuse to involve ourselves with energy-sapping gossip and conversations that go nowhere
  • Remove toxic people from our lives
  • Lean into our fear
  • Aim high
  • Make the best of this moment
  • Walk in nature
  • Make time for small pleasures
  • Leave a buffer of white space around our day
  • Refuse to hide behind excuses
  • Take ownership, be accountable
  • Turn up ready to do the work and ready to work hard
  • Live our truth

Reset what ‘normal’ means for you.  More importantly, own your version of it.
